A Breath of Fresh Air

In shooting fashion and artistic portrait photography for the last several years, I have met some wonderful people and some less than wonderful people. I always go into a shoot with a beginning model with optimism, but somewhat restrained expectations. Recently I met a gorgeous woman named Dawn, who easily exceeded even the highest hopes. They're always good looking (why bother otherwise?) but rarely as aware and confident in their presentation as this beautiful girl. Overconfidence bothers me about as much as anything in working with a new model, as to me, the chemistry between model and photographer is extremely important. Some of my work can be a little "challenging", though a lot of it, such as the examples here, depend greatly on the model's ability to improvise and pose without being a clichéd posing machine. Occasionally they "just get it".

Here's to hoping there will be many more sessions.

Black & White & Hard

For the last year or so, I've been much more into black & white photography in general, but also shooting in direct late afternoon sunlight, with very hard shadows. You still see a lot of this approach coming out of California, and off the top of my head, none better than Renee Jacobs. Note that I'm in no way comparing my work to hers, just stating one example.

Not the easiest shooting conditions and I have a lot to learn.

Been a little slack here lately. Been very busy though, and in a very good way.

Of the 12 or so people who read this blog, most of you know me personally, and know that the past two years have been a major struggle.

FIRST day of the year, I wake up, and through the fog, see that I've gotten Nude Image Of The Day on onemodelplace.com for a shot done back in the summer last year. Hey Cool!

So about a month prior (late November - early December), I had asked a new friend about her job and what she did. When she told me, I asked if the company was hiring. "I think so - send me a resume". Well, nothing came of it, though it's not exactly "hiring season" around the holidays anyway. So the first business day of the year, was Monday the 4th. I wake up (in probably another fog) and see that I've gotten an email from someone I don't know. It was the owner of the company I applied to a month prior. "Hi Marty, sorry I haven't gotten back to you earlier, but if you're still interested, we'd like to speak with you. When would be a good time?" "Ummm… how about tomorrow?" "Fine - see you at two." So I felt the interview went quite well, and very informal. On the way out, one of the owners said, "I'll let you know something tomorrow, I don't like to leave people hanging." Wonderful! So Wednesday, I wake up to an email… "If you'd like to work with us Marty, we'd love to have you."

HELL YES!!!

So I'm in celebration mode! Having a beer with a good friend, and I get a call from a band I had done a photograph for a couple months earlier. "Marty, we need a poster, and we need it REALLY SOON!" "Okay sure." So there's TWO jobs in one day! And it keeps getting better. No joke. The band has since commissioned me to do their album/CD design and packaging. Overpaid me for that even. Now doing a website for them. Bought me a real nice bottle of scotch - "a present from the band for all your work." Wonderful client - wonderful people!

So back to the JOB job. I didn't want another "creative" job. Didn't take one. I'm a link builder now. Coolest work environment and people. Ever. Hands down. Not even a close second. I feel very honored to work there.

And for the first time in a LONG time, I feel very blessed in life.

The Autism Society of North Carolina is a non-profit organization that provides services to clients and families affected by Autism. They rely heavily on donations and fundraisers to continue to provide those priceless services.

It is because of this that Mike Mullins and Justin Krick of The Flat Iron and Greg Sarine of The Autism Society of North Carolina have collaborated to start an annual benefit For Autism held at the Flat Iron. 3 nights/13 bands and hundreds of $ in raffle prizes drawn every night.

Back in May (yes I'm fucking BEHIND) I was at a bar speaking with Matty Sheets, wearing an absurd pair of white-rimmed shades. drunk I say "Hey let's shoot that shit tomorrow!" Matty- "Sure dude." So the next day, I'm doing a commercial shoot, and another good friend, Hurricane Rebecca calls… "HEY, I'm blowing through Greensboro, picking up Vassanta. Wanna do a quickie?" Ummm… Rebecca and Vassanta are professional models as well as friends. So, of course I wanna "do a quickie."

Rebecca drives up around 5pm. Matty (who I had NOT completely forgotten) pulls up on his bike as I'm speaking with Becca in the parking lot. So I ask Becca if she minds if there's a male "model" in the shoot. Being the babe/adventurer she is, "Sure."

Now Matty has no real idea what's going on, so I say, "Matty, yer gonna have a good day."

We shot for a total of 40 minutes. This is probably the best of it…

First off, I would like to thank this incredibly patient and beautiful model, Jillian Mauldin.

Sometimes I believe I think too much. I'm sure of it even. Lately (and for a long time) I've been thinking about "purity" in photography. I've never been too crazy about a lot of over-processed work, and even struggle with the idea of shooting digitally, and then processing the images to look like what one would do with film. Nonetheless, I TRY to do so. Though I've shot a lot of film in my life, I really don't have first-hand experience with many processing techniques, specifically cross-processing. I understand that it can be a bit of a crap shoot, though there are obviously some repeatable and predictable results. I'm not even suggesting that this photo is an attempt at a cross-processed look. I think it's somewhere between that, and an old (antique, out-of-date-film?) style. I try to do as much as possible "in-camera", but as far as I know, this image would be nearly impossible to produce straight from a digital camera. It's certainly beyond my ability. I rather like the image though, and I guess I'm as comfortable as I'm going to get with the methods I've used to produce it. I can't afford film and it pisses me off. I seriously doubt I could produce something all that close to this with film anyway. However, I do feel that it's a fairly successful attempt at a "film look". Is it pure? Nah, it ain't pure.

I would love to hear some feedback on this.

Why Marty, why do you say you're an asshole? Well gee, let's see. I had three photo shoots arranged from last Saturday through Tuesday. ONE actually showed up. Two were complete no-shows, and the other cancelled the day of. By email.

So today's model cancels. Big fucking surprise. So I contact a friend who I really like and have shot with several times. Yes, let's do it. So after being left hanging for five hours I call to see what's up. "Be at your place in an hour. An hour later, "Hey, ummmm, some friends showed up…" That's fucking great.

I have a friend in a city about an hour away who told me a year ago, "Man it'll be great that you're back in the area!" I've seen her once for about 30 minutes. And yeah, she's been a complete no-show a few times, and can't be bothered to return a fucking phone call.

There is someone who I thought was a pretty close friend, who for no explained reason will no longer speak with me. It ain't sweet.

So yeah…

I'm writing about a locked thread in the events forum, titled North Carolina.

Another photographer started a thread to apparently gauge interest in organizing a meet/greet in the area.

A moderator warned that the thread would be shut down without a date and place. I asked if there would be a better forum or approach…

"As I understand it, we don't have location or date at this time. That seems to be the point of the thread - to gauge interest and to arrange details. Would there be a better forum for this?"

From that point, I suggested a specific location, and the OP suggested a loose time frame - Mid-late October.

The moderator apparently couldn't be bothered with the courtesy to respond to my question and apparently the amount of time "he would give us" was less than a day, even though steps were clearly being made to address these specifics.

How are we supposed to arrange these things? A series of private messages would not only be convoluted and take SIGNIFICANTLY more effort, but in no way would reach as large an audience.

My main/first question is, will someone unlock the thread?

I've been a member here since the very early days, and have never been "brigged" or had my account suspended. At a time when there several threads about the moderators' arrogance, I stayed out of those, though I completely agreed. I DID, however on a few occasions note that there seemed to be a change in that particular climate, when apparently there was a reorganization of mod duties, and that I was seeing less of the mods' egos and a more even-handed approach.

This smacks of the old self-important "Goderator" approach.

Events like this can only be good for MM. Traffic = revenue. I personally KNOW a couple (at least) of the moderators of the site. I consider them friends. This is an extremely indignant and condescending attitude, when a simple answer would take the same amount of time as closing the thread.

North Carolina doesn't have nearly the population of the larger metro areas, so simply saying "It's going to be this date and this place is not likely to draw as large a crowd, as if we, as a group, arrange what works best for the community at large.

How are we supposed to organize an event otherwise?

Sorry for the long message.

Any help would be appreciated.

To answer your main / first question, the answer is no. The thread will not be unlocked.

And to answer the question of which forum is most appropriate for gauging interest for an event, the answer is the events forum as long as the thread fits within the framework that we provide.

If you want to organize an event, then start a new thread with location and date so that it'll stay open.

There was nothing in this thread that was outside the stated forum rules. A location was included in the initial thread title.

You are wrong in everything in this response. The OP did not "throw out" a location. I did. How can you know what the OP "knew". Nothing is clear that anyone was "not going to organize it". It would seem to me that suggesting a location, and then another person suggesting a time frame, would fall squarely into organizing it. It was being organized, until you decided it should be shut down. How can you surmise that no one has a problem with this, other than me? No one else has written? The thread is locked. What do you expect?

Beyond that, you gave no reason why the thread would be (incorrectly) locked, and again, wouldn't respond to my direct question in the thread. The thread followed the rules.

The first sentence in your most recent curt reply is exactly what irritated so many people about the moderators here in 2006-07. A very heavy-handed abuse of your authority in governing a community site, in a very civil thread that (again) followed the stated rules of the forum. Instead of addressing me by name, or closing with your own, you seem to feel the need to tell me how my time would be better spent. I'm not making these statements as a personal attack, or to be rude to you. You seem unwilling to show the same respect in return.

You are simply wrong, and unwilling to admit it. You have a conflict of interest in this particular issue. You apparently NEED to be right, though it has absolutely no effect on you.

The photography was created from October 2008 through June 2009, by several Greensboro photographers at The Dotmatrix Project's live events. In addition to my own work, you will see photography by: Alex Maness, Kevin Belton, Elizabeth Lemon, Jessi Hagood, Mark Smith, Doug Klesch, Carolyn de Berry, Stephen Charles. All artwork is for sale at very reasonable (and negotiable) prices.

This is also in conjunction with First Fridays, so we're expecting a large turnout. If you're in Greensboro this evening, stop by and say hello.

Darkness In A White Room

I guess this is more about that "style" thing, and changing it. I know I'm not breaking down any new doors or smashing through unknown barriers in the world of photography, but the changes in my life have brought changes in my work. I'm sure that's natural; maybe even expected. I think I was on the way to this direction before I left NYC, but the new studio offers a much more compelling atmosphere for the type of work I've always wanted to do. I've always shot in a sort of film noir style, or at least attempted to, but here, it's just more real, for lack of a better word.

The model is named Robin. The shoot was November of last year. I really would rather be shooting this type of work with film, and feel I should be, but I just can't afford it.

Two posts in less than a week. I can't believe it either. Thank you to those who push me to do this more often.

I think a lot about style and direction in photography. Do I have one, is it valid, is it MINE, etc.? Shit like that.

Well, since I moved, I'm shooting in a different location, (but I brought that nasty old mirror from the basement!) and it's naturally had an effect on my work. In a way, it's what I've wanted to do all along, though maybe subconsciously.
